REDEVELOPMENT UPDATE SUMMER 2023

Present: Left to Right

Board members Annie Marsh, Bill Rodnick, Jill Vermaire, Director of HR and Finance Stacey McDonald, Honourable Minister of Long-Term Care Paul Calandra, CEO Trisha DesLaurier, MPP John Yakabuski and Director of Care Gail Yantha

Honourable Minister of Long-term Care Paul Calandra attended Valley Manor on Monday, June 12th to review Valley Manor’s final stages of their redevelopment plans with John Yakabuski MPP, the Valley Manor Executive Team and the Board of Directors.

Valley Manor was eager to showcase the great redevelopment work that has been completed to date, despite the fact that the home is situated in a small rural community and faces additional challenges being a not for profit home as compared to larger communities.

Minister Calandra and MPP John Yakabuski reviewed the redevelopment plans and toured the facility with the team. Minister Calandra was very complementary to the redevelopment and fundraising work that has been completed so far, despite the challenges of the pandemic and being in a rural location which presents an additional layer of challenges to complete the journey.

The meeting was a part of Valley Manor’s advocacy efforts for an individual funding model for small rural homes with limited fundraising capacity.

John Yakabuski attended Valley Manor for a meeting on October 9th to discuss the redevelopment of the new Valley Manor with the Board of Directors, Senior Leader ship and the St. Francis Valley Healthcare Foundation.

Trisha Sammon CEO stated that the new Valley Manor will in fact be a 96 bed long term care home and has received final approval on October 4th from Christine Elliot, Minister of Health. The day after the Ontario Governments healthcare funding announcement.

Trisha Sammon feels that the recent announcement that the Government of Ontario will be adding 6000 new long-term care beds into the system to decrease hallway medicine is the perfect opportunity for us to address our challenges. I know that John Yakabuski recognizes that this added capacity is urgently needed to alleviate the burden on hospitals and ensure that seniors receive the most appropriate care in the most appropriate settings such as Valley Manor in Barry’s Bay.
